How Oxygenation In Your Blood Is Measured?
Yesterday we talked about Red Blood Cells (RBC) or erythrocytes and hemoglobin thus we now know that hemoglobin plays a big role in oxygenation of all cells in our body. In relation to that, we will talk about oximeter today. What is an oximeter? Oximeter is an instrument use to measure oxygen percentage in hemoglobin or simply the oxygenation of the blood.
How oxygen percentage in hemoglobin is measured? Oximeters are usually attached on fingertip or at the earlobe of patient. Then, absorption and saturation of hemoglobin in patient’s blood are recorded using oxymeter’s probe at 650nm-805nm range of wavelength of light. Please take note that oximeter just measure oxygenation and not oxygen metabolism.
Like any other instruments, there are factors that could cause problem in readings of pulse oximeter, slow blood flow due to venous congestion or vasoconstriction is a great example for it. There are lots of hemoglobin types, 2 of the said types are oxyhemoglobin and carboxyhemoglobin (methemoglobin). Carboxyhemoglobin (methemoglobin) can be confused as oxyhemoglobin by pulse oximeter because these two types of hemoglobin are difficult to distinguish. Bright overhead lights and nail varnish could also cause false reading thus, it should be avoided.
Pulse oximeter is not solely for hospital use with a purpose of detecting oxygen related problems and in analyzing if it is necessary for the patient to undergo an oxygen therapy. Mountain climbers, and people who undergo vigorous exercise like professional athletes uses portable pulse oximeter to measure their pulse rate and oxygenation of the blood too. People who are dependent on supplemental oxygen like pilot flying in non-pressurized airplanes use this instrument to measure the amount of supplemental oxygen needed.
We all know that oxygen is also a form of medication, this kind of medication could not be given without first determining the oxygen level in our blood. That is how important oximeter is to our community.

It is almost Valentine’s Day and all I could hear from single people are love, love and love. Love indeed is in the air nowadays. But, Valentine’s Day reminded me of how I experienced my first broken heart, so cheesy indeed, huh?
Some people says broken heart pain is nothing more than a folklore. I was not convinced that broken heart has no physical effect because I really felt a literal pain by the time I experienced it. I was encourage then to have some info about broken heart pain and how to cope up.
Stress cardiomyopathy or broken heart syndrome could be due to emotional shocks such as traumatic romantic break up, death of a loved one, or a shock in a surprise party. It has been found out that with stress cardiomyopathy or broken heart syndrome, stress hormone could shoot up to three times higher than those suffering from heart attack though patients possess unclogged and healthy arteries. Grief could stress the cardiovascular system thus causing a heart attack-like syndrome.
It is indeed possible to die from broken heart thus you need not to grieve that much. You can prevent yourself from suffering from stress cardiomyopathy or broken heart syndrome by drinking plenty of water (more than 8 glasses of water daily), take sufficient rest (8 hours sleep), having time for exercise everyday (at least 30 minutes everyday) and in learning things how to cope up stress.
The Best Way to Start Your Day
The best way to start your day is to welcome it with right attitude. Start your day with a positive attitude and shun any thoughts that produce stress. As much as possible, wake up 1 hour or at least 30 minutes before you start your daily routine like cooking breakfast for your family or have your family morning devotional. The first hour of your day which you spend alone could help a lot on how you face your daily challenges in life.
As you wake up, take time to relax and read a section of Scripture or an inspiring thought. Take time to reflect the passage to your life, and talk to God through prayer.
A glass or two of drinking water could satiate your body’s need of hydration. No single organ of your body that does not need water to for it to function well. You haven’t taken any liquid while you’re asleep, so better start your day by hydrating your body and excrete the waste ones.
Light exercise could not just help your body to be more flexible but your health in general. It can improve circulation and respiration aside from toning your muscles. Exercise could help you think clearly too.
It would be great if you take time to plan your activities for the day too. You can do it while you are exercising at the same time. If you need to be reminded, better jot down your plan of the day.
After doing all these things, you are now set for a wonderful day. Have a nice day my friend!
Diet, Exercise and Water For A Healthier Body
While other people are struggling to lose some weight, losing weight and maintaining it is so easy for me. It’s just a matter of diets that work, exercise and water intake.
Choosing the kinds of food to eat plays the biggest role. If you love to eat fatty, sweet, preserved and processed foods rather than fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes and grains, better not expect to lose some weight.
Yes, you may lose some weight if you just take it in in small amounts but there’s a big tendency for you not to maintain your desired weight. A healthy low-fat and sweets diet that emphasizes fruits, vegetables and grains could not just help you lose weight but also not to worry about gaining pounds back. You just need to make it part of your lifestyle so as exercise.
Water is of great help too in lossing weight aside from diet that work and exercise. Drinking 1-2 glasses of water at least 30 minutes before meal could make you feel full, making you eat less while it helps your body burn fat more efficiently and wash the toxins out of your body. So, better practice to drink at least 8 glasses of plain water a day.
