Onions typically carmelize when you fry them. They’re much more pleasant to eat for most people when they are cooked–even people who don’t like them raw! I’m one!

Caramelized Onions refers to when you brown onions to the point when the natural sugars come out. All you need to do is cook slices of onion in a pan with a few tablespoons of butter. The stove should be between medium and low heat. You want them to brown but not so fast that they burn. Make sure that you stir them often.
I would recommend a little salt. It pulls moisture out of the onions and speeds up the process. The onions will shrink to much less than what you started with so always use much more than what you want in the end. The flavor is wonderful and my guests love them served with many of my dishes.
